209 Women, 2018

209 female photographers were commissioned to photograph the 209 female MPs sitting in Parliament in 2018 to commemorate 100 years since women got the vote.

Inspired by Sir Benjamin Stone’s Parliamentary Scenes and Portraits in the early 1900s and some work I was doing working with a large format camera and paper negatives, I photographed MP Maria Miller on the terrace at the Houses of Parliament and contact printed the resulting negative in the darkroom.

209 Women went on show at the Houses of Parliament then toured to the Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool. It has been made into a book published by Bluecoat Press and the full collection is now part of the Parliamentary Archive. The exhibition can be viewed online at UK Parliament Heritage Collections.
